The Story扇子について

The sensu, the Japanese folding fan, has been part of Japanese ceremony, performance, and daily life for over a thousand years. Kyoto remains the heart of its craft — where artisans still paint, fold, and bind each fan by hand, using techniques passed down through generations of family workshops. 扇子は千年以上にわたって日本の儀式・芸能・日常生活に欠かせないものでした。その工芸の中心は今も京都——職人が手で描き、折り、綴じるその技法は、家業として世代から世代へと受け継がれています。

The fans you see here are from 宮脇賣扇庵 (Miyawaki Baisenan) — one of Kyoto's oldest and most celebrated sensu makers, founded in 1823. Each fan is a work of craft in its own right, hand-painted and assembled by artisans who have perfected the form over generations. ここに展示している扇子は、1823年創業の京都の老舗扇子店宮脇賣扇庵の品です。一本一本、職人が手で絵を描き、組み立てた工芸品です。
